2023 Election: Burna Boy Shares Reasons for Not Actively Participating

Burna Boy

Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy says he has not been vocal about the 2023 Election because he doesn’t want to endorse any candidate so that when they win and misuse power, nobody will come to drag him.

The singer has been heavily criticized by fans for not actively participating in the process like certain celebrities, e.g. Falz and Mr. P of PSquare have. Yet, Burna took to his Instagram story on Sunday, February 26, to warn INEC to uphold fairness while announcing the winners of the elections.

But Burna wasn’t quite done. He returned to IG story on Monday, February 28, and wrote:

“I dunno why it’s such a big deal to some Nigerians that I’ve not been vocal about the elections. Personally I don’t have a candidate that I believe in. I’ve never supported any political party or candidate in my life because I don’t want to make you vote and then blame me when the person fucks up as usual. That being said, I hope all votes count and the best man wins.”

The 2023 General Election took place on Saturday, February 25, and spilled over to Sunday, February 26, with the seat of the President of Nigeria (PON) hotly contested between the candidate of the ruling APC, Ahmed Tinubu; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the former ruling party, PDP; and the candidate of the resurging LP, former Governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi.

The process to announce the overall winner is ongoing in Abuja, and Tinubu is in the lead. However, many Nigerians have deplored the election, calling it one of the worst ever, as cases of violence, voter suppression, rigging, and flouting of the electoral law have been reported all over the country. Talks for INEC to intervene are currently gaining momentum.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on Burna Boys reasons for not participating in the election?
