The potential winners of the 2023 Oscars were announced on Tuesday, January 24 by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with Tems and Rihanna nominated for their work on ‘Lift Me Up’ from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie. The song also features director Ryan Coogler and Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson, and is up for Best Original Song. When the ceremony goes down on Sunday, March 12 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, both Tems and Rihanna will have a chance to win their first ever Academy Award. However, they face fierce competition from one-time winner, America’s sweetheart Lady Gaga. Gaga is nominated alongside Bloodpop for their work on ‘Hold My Hand’, which is featured in the movie Top Gun: Maverick.

Both ‘Lift Me Up’ and ‘Hold My Hand’ are excellent ballads that thematically heighten the poignance felt while seeing their respective movies. However, while Rihanna and Tems’ work draws inspiration from reality (a tribute to late Black Banther actor Chadwick Boseman), Gaga and Bloodpop’s song is completely down to the magic of ingenious imagination. As do most Marvel Movies (these days), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opened to good reception from fans all over the world. Many people also enjoyed and praised the album: ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By’ which was curated for the movie. Nigerian fans were notably ecstatic because Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, CKay, and of course, Tems all headlined songs on the project.

Top Gun: Maverick starred Tom Cruise and surprisingly exceeded expectations at the global Box Office. The original song for the film, ‘Hold My Hand’ spent a good number of weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, peaking at #49. The song however fared better in Europe, including in the Netherlands where it reached #1 on the Single Tips chart. On the other hand, ‘Lift Me Up’ peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks in part to fans’ longing for Rihanna to return to making music after nearly 7 years. Both ‘songs ‘Hold My Hand’ and ‘Lift Me Up’ have what it takes to emerge with an Oscars trophy, but sadly, only one of them will.

There are other terrific songs nominated in the same category, of course, including: ‘Naatu Naatu” from RRR (Music by M.M. Keeravaani; Lyric by Chandrabose), and “This Is a Life” from the spectacular Everything Everywhere All at Once (Music by Ryan Lott, David Byrne and Mitski; Lyric by Ryan Lott and David Byrne). To fail to regard them as strong contenders too, would be wrong, as we know the Oscars to always have one or two tricks up their sleeves.
