6 Afrobeats Albums to Anticipate in the First Quarter of 2023


Some artists, Kizz Daniel for instance, have carried over their good form from last year into 2023, while some are still charting their course for a successful year.

As the days unfold and plans succeed and unravel, the year will start taking shape. However, artists who have been building from 2022 will likely make their mark in the turn of the year, be it with new singles or new projects.

Some have even announced when we can expect the release of new stuff from them; and on this list, we’ve included a couple of albums we anticipate will be releasing soon.

Ajebutter 22
Title: Soundtrack to The Good Life
Release Date: Friday, January 20

Nigerian Alte music and DIY pioneer Ahebutter 22’s 3rd solo project titled “Soundtrack to The Good Life” is out on Friday, January 20. The album features a posh ensemble, including appearances from Kida Kudz, Oxlade, and Afro-swing duo Ajebo Hustlers. Four singles: “Enjoyment (with Ajebo Hustlers)”, “Unconditionally (with Oxlade)”, “Confam (with Kida Kudz)”, and “King of Parole” have already heralded the project’s roll out.

Joeboy’s rise to superstardom remains one of Afrobeats’ most storied chronicles. Since his impressive debut album, 2021’s “Somewhere Between Beauty and Madness”, he’s sort of relapsed. But after building momentum with a couple of singles last year, Joeboy is ready to reassert himself, confirming in an interview that his second album will drop between now and March. Good news.

Davido had that one off “man proposes, God disposes” year last year, with so many plans ultimately proving abortive, including the release of his almost-done fourth studio album. However, we presume he’s done grieving the death of his son, and is ready to get back to business. It’s only a matter of time.

Mavin Records’ singer Crayon has announced on social media that 2023 will be the year he makes his album debut. Observant followers of Don Jazzy’s outfit know that artists signed to the label always drop an EP as part of their unveiling. Crayon released his in 2021– a 4-track project that featured in-house singer Rema, and Bella Shmurda. Since then, he’s kept busy with a couple of impressive singles and made remarkable contributions to the recently released Mavin All Stars album.

At this point, Ruger’s mantra must be ‘unrushed’. However, his team and him know that releasing his debut album is becoming overdue. And with the steam garnered by his latest singles, the first quarter of 2023 presents a decent opportunity to eventually launch. After all, resistance is futile.

Tems is already an Afrobeats pantheon for the numerous glories her work has earned Africa. And even more remarkably, her success has come off the back of two EPs: 2020’s “For Broken Ears” and 2021’s “If Orange Was A Place”. Without saying much, her fans deserve a full album debut this year, and after a project-less 2022, it might be one of the early birds to arrive in 2023.
