About Adekunle Gold
Adekunle Gold gained widespread popularity after his cover of American rock band One Direction’s “Story Of My Life” opened to positive reception from audiences. The record was titled “Sade” and in the same year it was released, Gold signed a record deal with YBNL Nation, going on to release his full debut album Gold with the label in 2016.
An Adobe Photoshop expert, Adekunle Gold designed the cover art of his debut album. Gold contained 16 tracks, preceded by singles “Sade,” “Orente,” and “Pick Up.” His contact at YBNL expired forcing the singer to become an independent act.
In 2018, he released his second studio album “About 30.” The album divided opinions among critics, who praised his creativity, but picked the project apart for being one-dimensional and too accustomed his Yoruba descent.
He married long time sweetheart, Nigerian Afropop sensation Simisola in 2019 and they welcomed their first child in 2020.
His contract at YBNL expired and Adekunle Gold and his band The 79th Element moved into the independent artist space, signing several endorsement deals and debuting his third studio album Afro Pop: Vol. 1 in 2020.
Afro Pop Vol. 1 rose to the occasion, with the singer defying his critics. Lead single “Okay” became a street anthem in Gold’s home country, Nigeria.
It wasn’t only Gold’s musical signature that evolved with Afro Pop Vol. 1, the singer switched up his looks, often appearing with dreadlocks or braided hair.
The success of his third studio album prompted the release of fourth studio album Catch Me If You Can in 2022- a project which was majorly pushed by lead singles “It Is What It Is,” “Sinner, (ft. Lucky Daye)” and “High (ft. Davido).”
On March 5, AG Baby, as fans fondly call him, performed alongside singer Davido at the O2 Arena in London.
He’s won several awards including The Headies and City Peoples Award.
