90’s American Hip Hop group The Fugees have confirmed a visit to Lagos, Nigeria as part of plans to mark the 25th anniversary of their critical acclaimed and 1996 Grammy award winning album The Score.
Following its release in February 19996, The Score became one of the biggest hits of the year and one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time.
The Fugees first gained attention for its cover versions of old favourites, with the group’s reinterpretations of “No Woman No Cry” by Bob Marley & the Wailers and “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (first recorded by Lori Lieberman in 1971, remade by Roberta Flack in 1973), the latter being their biggest hit.
The celebration will mark the group’s first reunion for 15 years. Despite only having two studio albums together, The Fugees, which consisted of musical stalwarts Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel are one of the most sampled and namedropped group in the history of Hip Hop.
Their tour, which will be produced by Live Nation will span 12 locations, including Lagos, Nigeria. Though the date for the Lagos visitation is yet to be confirmed, The Fugees will also make a cameo in Accra, Ghana on December 18, 2021.
