American Music Awards 2022: New Afrobeats category will see Burna Boy, Ckay, Fireboy, Tems, and Wizkid battle for top spot

Afrobeats now has a category at the American Music Awards.

Nominees for the 2022 AMA awards was officially unveiled on Thursday, October 13. The American Music Awards (AMAs) is an annual awards show created by Dick Clark for broadcast house, ABC. The AMAs represent the year’s top achievements in music determined by the fans and, for the fans.

For the 2022 edition, the AMAs organizers have introduced a new category– the Afrobeats sound dubbed “Favorite Afrobeats Artist.”

Challenging for this inaugural award include:

  • Fireboy
  • Tems
  • Wizkid

This move by the AMAs attest to Afrobeats’ fast-growing global appeal and wider acceptance from distinct class of audiences, especially stateside. The Grammys may even yet follow in their footstep in the next instalment of the award that will hold in 2023. CEO Harvey Mason Jr., recently confirmed that consideration plans are underway.

The 2022 American Music Awards will air live from Microsoft Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT (approx. 2 a.m. WAT) on ABC.
