Asake dropped his first single of 2023– ‘Yoga’– on Monday, January 30.
On ‘Yoga’, he sings over an uncharacteristically dark production from iconic Nigerian producer Magicsticks, laying into the instrumental’s feel-good rhythm with his trademark refrain.
“I dey on my away hey, I dey maya, make nobody kill my yoga yoga”, he declares on the 2-mins-51-seconds record. After that incredible run in 2022 that took the industry by surprise, as well as a few controversies and the cons that come with fame and success, the Lagos native is back prioritising his peace.
“Enemies I get them too much; it is better to get them surplus; who go dey for you no go take off”, reinforcing the time-long adage that friends stay no matter what happens.
But if there’s so much to adore about Yoga’s audio rendition, there’s, even more, to love about its jarring video.
The video was shot in Francophone Dakar, Senegal and directed by current industry go-to videographer TG Omori, who combines beautiful images from the beach with masquerades and African architecture.
Omori’s chemistry with Asake often allows the pair to push their limits. In ‘Yoga’ video, Asake embodies a medium (in tune with his psyche), a merchant, and a leader whose sole fucus is on his business.
The 28-year-old’s hit-maker credentials was laid down last year with songs like ‘Omo ope’, ‘Sungba’, ‘PBUY’, ‘Terminator’, etc. ‘Yoga’ adds to that growing list.
