Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s second installment in the Avatar series has sailed right past the billion-dollar mark creating a new record for the year and proving naysayers wrong.

The sequel reached one billion dollars in global ticket sales in a record 14 days earning $300 million locally and over $700 million overseas to join Top Gun: Maverick ( which took 31 days to cross) and Jurassic World: Dominion (which took four months to cross) as the only three films to gross over a billion dollars in 2022.

The Way of Water takes viewers back to Pandora over a decade since the last visit, reintroducing Jake Sully and Neytiri. As the war with humans persists, Jake and Neytiri seek refuge with the water tribe of Pandora and must be ready to defend their family at all costs.

While these numbers appear mind-boggling, it remains to be seen whether the sequel would eventually cross the break-even point needed for it to be considered a success, at least in Cameron’s and the Studio’s eyes. He previously stated that The Way Of Water would need to become the third or fourth highest grossing film of all time, implying a minimum gross of $2 billion for it to be considered profitable.

Also, despite reaching this milestone in record time, Avatar: The Way Of Water still has large shoes to fill as the original film, Avatar released 13 years ago grossed a record $2.29 billion and still holds the record for the highest-grossing film ever.
