‘Back In Uni’: All the artists that Blaqbonez copied in his captivating directorial debut and where he copied them from

Blaqbonez dropped several references, and recreated the looks of some popular Afrobeats stars, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Asake and more in the video for ‘Back In Uni’.

On October Wednesday, October 12, Blaqbonez shared the music video for his latest single Back In Uni. Prior to its release, the Chocolate City rapper had promised fans the video would slap-hard as much as it would surprise them. It did.

The video begins with Bonez controversially crashing a wedding photograph session. He appears uninvited and picks out one flower from the bride’s bouquet before beating the bridesmaids to catching the corsage and refusing to let go it.

Not only did Blaqbonez unearth his inner TG Omori (after joking on Twitter he couldn’t afford the director), co-directing the video with Perlinks, he also channelled his inner copycat– wittingly packing the video with recreated looks of some notable Afrobeats stars.

We’ve dismantled the captivating video to show you all the visual references in it and the artist or work that inspired them.

Recognize this one? You guessed right if you thought this was the cover art for Wizkid’s latest single Bad to Me.

Blaqbonez just had to add Zazzu master, Portable to his list of fancied artists. And, why not?

Blaqbonez recreated a classic Burna Boy look that formed the cover of the Autumn edition of the online Dazed Magazine.

Recognize this one? Ayra Starr sported this look in a promotional video for the visuals of her latest hit single Rush. See it here.

No credits for guessing this was what Ruger wore in the video for Snapchat. It’s that popular.

Hair don’t lie, puffy jacket doesn’t lie. Blaqbonez tries to recreate BNXN fka Buju’s looks in this frame. How close do you think he came?

Carter Efe went viral this year, not for comedy. But for his Wizkid inspired debut song Machala. A promotional video for the song got some love from Blaqbonez in the Back In Uni video.

Blaqbonez channels his inner Oxlade Ku Lo Sa. Remember the video?

Perhaps the easiest one to recognize. Blaqbonez tries to recreate Asake’s iconic look from the video for Fireboy DML’s Bandana. He donned the outfit to interrupt a nuptial exchange in the video. Remember “Dem never see me comin'”?

Which of these references did you guess correctly before reading this post? Which one is your favourite and do you think we missed any one?
