Nigerian comedians Basketmouth and AY are unarguably two of the biggest stand-up comedians of their generation. Alongside selling out big shows and mentoring some of the brightest comedians we have now, they have also transitioned to film and TV productions, featuring, and taking charge of several big titles. However, there will always be speculations of tensions and rifts in their relationship given that they are the two biggest comedy kingpins in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, on the presenter’s Black Box Interview series on Bounce Radio, Basketmouth opened up about his relationship with AY.
“I don’t mess around with loyalty. He came into my space and messed around with loyalty,” said Basketmouth, meaning there was indeed a rift between him and AY.
“He said something that he wasn’t supposed to say. That was going to cause a rift between me and this person. “It was Magmus (Umeri), my lawyer. I said something to AY, and he told Magmus, and he wasn’t supposed to say it.”
The 43-year-old comedian, however, played down the situation and revealed they have since buried the hatchet.
“We made peace and he apologised,” Basketmouth said but also clarified that although he and AY do not enjoy typical friendship, their relationship remains cordial.
Basketmouth also played down the speculation that he fell out with AY because he took in his former mentee Bovi.
“I did not snatch Bovi. Bovi is not a girl,” the My Flat Mates star said before insisting that he met Bovi for the very first time at a show in Abuja, and from there, they became friends.
Basket and Bovi have worked on several projects in the past, although fans have not seen that synergy in recent times. When quizzed about his current relationship with Bovi, he said, “Hustle, everybody is hustling; Bovi stepped into a new world. He is busy, and he does not have my time. Me, I’m hustling.”
Before ending the interview, the father of 4 shared that he’s got a special project coming in 2022, and it is titled The Voices in My Head.
