Bill and Melinda Gates, celebrity breakups that have rocked the internet in 2021

On May 3, 2021 co-founders of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, couple for 27 years, and co parents to Rory, Phoebe, and Jennifer Gates took to Twitter to announce they are putting an end to their union. It was a shocking news that’s still tearing up the internet, with many people wondering what could have gone wrong between the world’s fourth richest man and his lovely partner whom he considers his equivalent in all ramifications.

If there was one celebrity couple that we thought had everything under control, it had to be Bill and Melinda. However, it is becoming a pattern in high-class unions as we have come to realise in recent times.

We take a glance at some of the high-profile splits in 2021, not forgetting we still have more than 6 months to go.

Bill and Melinda Gates

Bill Gates announced that he and wife Melinda were splitting after 27 years of marriage on May 3, 2021.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the Microsoft co-founder tweeted. “We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives,” said Gates in the tweet.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West

Another split that broke the internet. This would have been the split of the year, save for Bill and Melinda’s. However, Kanye and Kim have commenced proceedings in court for divorce. The couple share four children, cited reasons of irreconcilable differences following a tumultuous year in the public eye amid West’s failed presidential campaign and his ongoing battle with Bipolar.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez

J Lo and former Baseball shortstop called it quits in April 2021 after 4 years of courting. They got engaged in 2019.

Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas

Ben Affleck and Cuban actress, Ana de Armas broke things off after about a year together because the ‘Batman’ and ‘Knives Out star,’ as a source described it, were at “different places” in their lives. Affleck, who has three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, “would not commit to having more kids,” an insider revealed, adding: “(De Armas) is in her 30s. It was a deal-breaker.”

Luke Evans and Raphael Olarra

Beauty and the Beast actor, Luke Evans and his boyfriend, former soccer player Raphael Olarra called it quits in January 2021. Luke later confirmed the news in UK Times magazine, saying: “it is what it is.”

Rebel Wilson and Jacob Busch,

“Pitch Perfect” and “Hustle” actress, Rebel Wilson, 40, split from her boyfriend Jacob Busch this year. They started dating before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe, and made their red carpet debut at Prince Albert‘s Planetary Health Gala in Monaco and posed alongside Kate Beckinsale and Helen Mirren.

G-Eazy and Ashley Benson

After about a year together, “Pixels” actress, Ashley Benson and rapper, G-Eazy called it quits in February. Alert and perceptive fans first started suspecting things were over between the pair when Benson unfollowed the rapper on social media. They were right.

Saweetie and Quavo

Rappers Saweetie and Quavo are no longer an item, with the “Tap In” artist subtly calling out the Migos member on Twitter for his role in the split.
“I’m single,” she stated clearly. “I’ve endured too much betrayal and hurt behind the scenes for a false narrative to be circulating that degrades my character. Presents don’t band aid scars and the love isn’t real when the intimacy is given to other women.” The couple quietly began dating in 2018, with Saweetie confirming their relationship on daytime talk show “The Real.”

Zac Efron and Vanessa Valladares

“High School Musical” star, 33, met Vanessa, 25, in June 2020 while she was working at the Byron Bay General Store in New South Wales. According to the Daily Mail, Valladares quit her job to spend more time with Efron. Last October, Valladares threw the “Greatest Showman” star a surprise birthday bash in her home country. The couple were joined by guests including radio host Kyle Sandilands, tennis champ Pat Rafter and members of the Hemsworth family. But after a whirlwind 10-month romance the couple have called it quits.

There are many other high-profile breakups this year, these are but a few. In 2019, billionaire, Jeff Bezos and wife, Scott MacKenzie finalised their divorce after reaching a settlement that saw Scott get more than $50 billion. It would be interesting to see how the Bill and Melinda Gates case develops, especially how they handle their co-run ventures, with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation being the biggest- an organisation responsible for majority of the health-related interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Middle East.

Trevor Noah and Minka Kelly

The Friday Night Lights star and host of The Daily Show dated for about a year. In May 2021, multiple sources said they broke up including People and Complex.
