It was a surreal moment for the inhabitants, especially the children of Oshodi, a bustling commercial settlement in Lagos metropolis, as former Manchester United and retired French international Patrice Evra paid them a visit.
The World Cup silver medalist and Champions League winner’s visit was to express support and strengthen the Chess in SLums” initiative– an intervention for African children, especially those out of school founded by Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya.

As well as Ohodi, Onakoya has taken the Chess in Slums initiative to other communities in Lagos including Majidun, and Makoko.
