A recent report making the rounds alleges that Chris Rock was offered the gig to host The Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) in 2023, but turned it down. The Oscars is the most prestigious of all the movie awards in existence, worldwide, so why would Rock turn it down?
The rundown in case you’ve been living under a rock all this time… THE SLAP.
At the 2022 Oscars, earlier this year, Chris Rock was physically assaulted on stage by Will Smith for using the latter’s wife as a muse for a joke. Smith has gone on to issue multiple apologies for that singular, thoughtless action, and the rift between these two Hollywood legends is yet to heal. Perhaps in a bid to help hasten the healing process, The Academy might has thought it wise to have Chris Rock host the next edition of the event, but Rock isn’t playing ball. The comedian is reported to liken accepting the invitation as “returning to the scene of a crime”.
Will Smith has since been banned for 10 years by The Academy and has seen a lot of his movie deals revoked. While complete reconciliation between both parties is still possible and in the future, it seems to still be a distance away.
