American rapper and actor Artis Leon Ivey Jr. known professionally as Coolio passed away in his hometown of Los Angeles California on Wednesday September 28 aged 59.
Coolio became a force to reckon with in the L.A. rap scene during the late 80s, but blew up nationally in 1995 when he released “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film, “Dangerous Minds.”
The late rap legend leaves behind a catalogue of music including 8 studio albums (last one coming in 2009), several mixtapes and a host of singles. His style remains one of the hardest to replicate in Hip Hop and he will be remembered as an icon of the game, not just for his famous spikey braids.
Two songs though, remain the hallmark of Coolio’s discography– the Grammy winning ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ in 1994 and 1997’s ‘C U When U Get There’.
The two records have stayed evergreen and will continue to remain so, travelling through generations with the same effect as though they’d been kept in amber.
