Extraction was a smash hit for Netflix. The 2020 movie about a black-market mercenary (Chris Hemsworth) hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord was so popular it broke multiple streaming records for the streaming service soon after its release.
One of such standout record-breaking announcements was how it had quickly surpassed Bird Box (2018) to become the most-streamed movie on the platform at that time with > 90 million households said to have watched it in its first four weeks of release. Extraction was so popular a sequel made sense, commercially, even though the way the movie ended left very little room for it. It didn’t take long for Netflix to announce a sequel, less than two weeks after Extraction’s release, much to fans’ excitement.
Extraction 2 began filming on November 29, 2021, in Prague; Director Sam Hargrave broke the news on his Instagram account.
