Earlier this year, international advocacy organization, Global Citizen announced plans for her Global Citizen Live – a 24-hour global event that will take place across several strategic and influential locations on all the 6 continents of the world including Africa. The event is slated to start on the 25th of September 2021 and more details have now been revealed, with regards to artists that will headline the shows across the locations.
Davido, Tiwa Savage, Femi Kuti, and Made Kuti will headline the Global Citizen Live event from Lagos, Nigeria. According to reports, the show will be filmed in advance with a fully vaccinated audience.
Along with live performances in Lagos, there will be festivals in Paris, and in New York City, USA on that day. The aim of the performances are to help mobilize citizens to demand that world leaders, major corporations, and philanthropists work together to defeat poverty and defend the planet by focusing on the most urgent, interrelated threats hitting those in poverty the hardest – climate change, vaccine equity, and famine.
Commenting on the development, Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo Olu said, “Lagos State is thrilled to be a part of Global Citizen Live. With the challenges of rising poverty, hunger and vaccine inequity facing Africa, we need businesses and governments around the world to respond to the call of citizens, stand in solidarity with the people of Africa, and commit to defending the planet and defeating poverty and inequality.”
At the New York City festival, Grammy Award winner Burna Boy will share the stage with the iconiv US rock band Coldplay, Cyndi Lauper, Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello, Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, Meek Mill and Shawn Mendes, while four-time Grammy Award winner and Beninese Angélique Kidjo will be performing at the Paris event alongside Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, DJ Snake, H.E.R., Christine and The Queens, and the Black Eyed Peas.
