Writer and director of the 2019 smash-hit Joker, Todd Philips has officially confirmed that plans for Joker 2 are already underway. Todd revealed this info via his official Instagram handle and calls the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux.
Not much is known about the form the sequel will take, but the subtitle Folie à Deux is translated to mean “delusion or mental illness shared by two people in close association,” which could be an allusion to a sibling for Arthur (Joker) lurking around in the shadows.
The 2019 Joker movie followed failed comedian Arthur Fleck who wears two masks — the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he’s part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.
Joker earned $1.074 billion during its run-time at the cinemas, officially making it the first R-rated movie in history to earn over $1 billion at the global box office. Against its meagre $62.5 million budget, “Joker” became one of the most profitable superhero movies of all time.
