American rapper, producer, and business mogul Kanye West has revealed what he thinks is the best song ever made.
During an Instagram posting spree on Sunday (September 4), the Chicago Hip Hop icon heaped high praise on WizKid and Tems’ “Essence.”
“Best song in the history of music to date,” he wrote next to a screenshot of him listening to the track on Apple Music.
Both Wizkid and Tems reposted West’s post on Instagram Stories, while the likes of Naomi Campbell, rapper Tech N9ne and producer Digital Nas co-signed his lofty praise.
“YES !!!! THANK YOU AT @kanyewest @wizkidayo @tems,” wrote Campbell in the comments section. Tech9ne added: “Thank you for this energy! Felt great!”
Released in October 2020 as the fourth single from WizKid’s Made In Lagos album, “Essence” went on to become a global hit. In the U.S., the sensual collaboration debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first Nigerian song in history to appear in the top 10 of the chart.
Kanye is not the first renowned American musician to think this highly of “Essence.” Before the 2022 Grammys, Nicki Minaj and Joe Budden termed it ‘record of the year,’ insisting it deserved to win the Grammy award for the same category.
Despite losing out at the 2022 Grammy Awards, “Essence” won various other honours including a BET award and has since been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). An official remix featuring Justin Bieber was later released, while DaBaby also put his spin on the Afrofusion record.
Coincidentally, while Kanye West was lavishing praise on “Essence” the record was enjoying another triumphant victory at the 2022 Headies Awards.
“Essence” was produced by British-Nigerian producer P2J and, judging by its numbers, it’s unarguably Nigeria’s biggest musical export till date.
