In 2019’s Knives Out, movie lovers all over the world were introduced to Benoit Blonc, the eccentric, cigar smoking private detective who took center stage in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery drama. The star-studded film which featured Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anna De Armas, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, and Lakeith Standfield to mention but a few was released to so much critical and financial success, earning several awards and nominations including Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical or Comedy and an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. So much of a success that the likelihood of a sequel was never really in doubt. Soon after, it was disclosed that Lionsgate, the films distribution company had already commissioned a sequel with Daniel Craig set to reprise his role as the flamboyant detective even prior to the film’s premiere. Things took a different turn however when Rian Johnson and his partner in production Ram Bergman sold the rights of the film to entertainment mogul company Netflix for a whopping $469million with a two-film commitment agreed on purchase and with Daniel Craig to reprise his role in both sequels.

Few months after its purchase, production for its sequel officially titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery began in summer 2021 with an ensemble cast yet again. It was announced that the sequel would feature Edward Norton, Jannelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista and would be released in December 2022.

For the first time in months, Netflix in an article published on their official website revealed some information as to what to expect in the upcoming whodunnit as well as set photos and the official release date.

The sequel follows the new adventures of lead detective Benoit Blonc as he joins a tech billionaire in a getaway that soon evolves into a new mystery that requires solving. The films official synopsis reads as follows:

“If Knives Out was about the murderous ties of flesh and blood, Glass Onion makes a good case for being just as wary of one’s closest friends. When a tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, well, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?”

Knives Out 1

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is said to center around Benoit Blonc as opposed to the previous installment which saw Anna De Armas’ Martha Cabrera take center stage.

“You definitely get to know him a little bit better,” he says. “In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”

Rian Johnson, the films writer and director previously known for the time travel action thriller Looper and the epic space drama film Star Wars: The Last Jedi also promises a sequel with a completely different feel than original as he tries to create a world for his lead detective in a fashion similar to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot.

“Every single time, she found a way into it that felt unique and fresh, and you could tell it was challenging her creatively,”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is expected to premier in select theatres on an undisclosed date and will be released globally on Netflix on December 23.
