Rapper Jude Lemfani Abaga, known professionally as M.I Abaga has revealed he will be retiring the M.I moniker ahead of the release of his fourth solo album.
M.I made this known via the website of his creative agency, TASCK; www.thetasck.com, and across his social media pages. The 40-year-old rapper also teased his forthcoming album, referring to it as “hard AF.”
According to the rapper, the untitled album will release next month, August 2022, and his last act as M.I Abaga will come when he performs at the “The Vibe” on the 10th of July, celebrating his legacy as Africa’s greatest rapper.
M.I rose to prominence in 2008 following the success of his debut studio album “M.I 1: Talk About it.” Since then, he’s remained one of Nigeria and Africa’s most critically acclaimed rappers, going on to drop three other solo projects, the last of which released in 2018. He recently released a joint album ‘Behold The Lamb‘ with rappers Loose Kanyon, AQ, and Blaqbonez.
The TASCK homepage contains a thumbnail image of the rapper in the middle as well as 3 other folders, as M.I and his team look to have recreated similar creative rollout strategy used by popular American rapper Kendrick Lamar to launch his latest album ‘Mr Morale & The Big Steppers.’
While one of the folders contained the name change message, another contained a note to the fans with M.I signing off as ‘the guy.’ Check it out below.
I hope you haven’t lost the feeling…
There’s a feeling you always had as child. When you saw a new game, a new challenge, a new toy… you wanted to try it first! You wanted to be the person to experience it first! You were not afraid to ask for it because you knew you were worthy.
Often this world can make us forget that… forget our worth. It can make us afraid to ask to be selected, to be chosen, to say when it is our turn to be acknowledged or honored.
Whether messiah or traitor, loved or hated, you deserve to never lose that feeling. You deserve to retain the confidence that came with your childlike sense of wonder.
I hope that through this album, you remember that feeling. Confidence. How it felt when you knew that before anybody else, you de! Na you still de!
I hope you remember that you have always been the worthy one.”
– the guy
The last of the 3 folders contains a 30-second-long video clip layered with a probable snippet of new music from the forthcoming album, as M.I raps “Alhamdulillah, God is great I can’t lie.”
Not that this has been officially confirmed, but we think M.I’s forthcoming album is titled “the guy.”
