It’s a been a terrific year for Nigerian music and an even better year for listeners and lovers of the sound. The future is indeed sparkling, especially as young and immaculately talented musicians such as Tems, Joeboy, Omalhay, Fireboy DML, Rema, Ayra Star, et cetera continue to dominate, both on the local and intercontinental scenes.
Although Wizkid released his fourth studio album Made In Lagos around this time last year, it hardly feels like the project has been around that long, and the world just can’t seem to get enough of it as it continues setting and smashing records globally. Coupled with the deluxe version dropping in August, we’ve also witnessed several Nigerian musical heavyweights, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, and Dbanj release albums this year. Meanwhile some hugely anticipated projects, including Johnny Drille, Blaqbones, and Laycon’s debut studio albums finally arrived, much to the delight of fans.
We asked our staff to pick their top 5 trending Nigerian songs, and with so much good music popping up everywhere, back to back, it was always going to prove a herculean task. And rightly so, as very difficult choices had to be made.
