Army of the Dead 2

Army of the Dead is a 2021 American action movie directed by Zack Snyder and based on a story he developed. It is an original Netflix movie and started streaming on the 21st of May 2021.

Snyder’s name had much been heralded this year among movie lovers, especially since the release of Justice League: Snyder Cut, a project that was hugely anticipated and to some extent, rose to the occasion of great expectations.

As a result, fans, including myself have come to anticipate whatever project he embarks on to be of the highest standard- Army of the Dead disappoints.

A mash up of zombies, heist, and action seemed inventive, and promising. Even more so, the trailer of Army of the Dead was hugely impressive and stoked more interest in the movie, but that’s what trailers are supposed to do.

Snyder’s Army of the Dead stars David Bautista as Scott Ward, a national hero who fought in the early zombie wars but had to kill his wife when she became infected, and abandoned his daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell) because of guilt.

It also stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Mr Tanaka, a businessman who intends to make a controllable zombie army. Tanaka hires Scott to put together a team of mercenaries to pull off a $200 million heist at the heart of a zombie quarantine territory in Las Vegas whereas his actual aim is to secure a specimen of an original zombie to kick-start his illegal military program.

Although it started off nicely, the plot morphed into another bland sequence that is now characteristic of Netflix original action movies. Tanaka asks his chief of security, Martin (Garret Dillahunt), a prick who reeked of disloyalty and cowardice, to go with Scott’s team guising to support them whereas his task is to retrieve the zombie specimen.

But if Tanaka cared less about the money, why not promise the mercenaries the entire loot in exchange for the specimen? The only reason that doesn’t make more sense is that we wouldn’t have any movie. Perhaps Tanaka’s resolve would be that his motive was unethical, but it didn’t seem like Scott and his men would have declined the offer, after all, what are paid guns for?

Also, once Scott agreed to let his estranged daughter, Katie, join the team, it was obvious the plan was doomed and headed for failure. A soldier with daddy issues and his stubborn daughter on the same team, on a dangerous mission, how cliché is that?

However, there were impressive performances from the actors, especially Matthias Schweighöfer who killed his character, Dieter, a humorous but passionate German locksmith who had never killed or fought a zombie before.

Garret Dillahunt also did a great job with Martin, while Ella Purnell played the role of Scott’s hard-headed and brave estranged daughter to perfection.

The stunts are impressive, the fight sequences as well, expect Bautista to not disappoint. It was also enjoyable to watch Samantha Win who played Chambers, kick the s**t out of those zombies before giving up.

Nonetheless, Zack would have to explain how Vanderohe (Omari Chadwick) survived a nuclear blast with no scratches.

Asides the obvious plot twists, Army of the Dead will excite most lovers of the action genre.

Final Verdict 2.5/5

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
