In a surprise turn of events leading up to the looming Streaming War, WhatsApp declares interest to vie for some space of its own in the fast-populating arena by teasing and releasing a trailer for Naija Odyssey, a 12-minute documentary featuring the Nigerian-Greek star of the moment, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
According to WhatsApp, it’ll follow Giannis Antetokounmpo origin story of many origins as he reconciles his roots, birthplace, and sense of belonging between cross-cultural worlds.
Giannis and the rest of the Antetokounmpos took center stage at Disney+ just a few months ago when Rise was released to critical acclaim. Lightning seems hung on striking twice with the arrival of the WhatsApp-owned docu.
Plot twist – While Naija Odyssey is owned and produced by WhatsApp, it won’t be streaming on the platform as you might have guessed already, it just can’t support that form of media, yet. The Meta-owned instant messaging service will be enlisting the help of Amazon Prime Video to get its message out there. A fine collaboration, if you ask me. Depending on how well this union fares, expect to not have heard the last of WhatsApp-Originals yet. I hope to get used to that tag sooner rather than later.
The short premieres on Prime Video on September 21, 2022.
