National Awards: Teni wins MON Award, Buhari allegedly wins over ‘advocates of good parenting”

This is how we see the controversy surrounding Teni’s National Award acceptance footage.

Teni and Buhari

The Nigeria National Awards 2022 gala went down last night (Tuesday, October 11) at the State House in Abuja. Among high-flying Nigerians to receive honours on the night were singers Teni “the Entertainer” Akpata, 2Baba, and Burna Boy. However, it’s Teni’s acceptance move that’s gotten the most attention from spectators.

Although we find nothing controversial about the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) Award acceptance footage which has been making the rounds, some conservative Yoruba people have slandered the “Billionaire” singer for rather not maintaining the Yoruba salutation code of conduct for a woman, towards President Buhari who presented the award.

In the video footage, Teni sported a black suit, and dark shades as she went to receive her plaque and have a photograph with the President. According to fans, except for when the camera flashes, she didn’t seem excited.

Fans who have not been impressed with Buhari’s administration have, however, jumped in to defend the singer, lauding her for the emotionless cameo. Check out some of the hard takes on Twitter over the issue footage below.

Qudus Akanbi Eleyi Of Lagos. on Twitter: “The National award Teni won at a young age is bigger than the Grammys but Teni not kneeling or bending to show respect for President Buhari shows she has lost the yoruba culture in her. / Twitter”

Rinu Oduala 🔥🔫 on Twitter: “If I was Teni, once I reached that stage and collected the award, I would kneek down immediately and clean Buhari’s shoes.I would not stop there but proceed to donate myself to a lifetime of servanthood.I must show absolute & total respect! Especially as a woman, you know. / Twitter”

Series Abíọ́dún ‘Baj ☻ on Twitter: “* Teni smiled while taking the pictures. * Buhari closed the lid of the award, he didn’t stretch hand to shake. * Even an average northerner do not shake a woman. * Teni walked off immediately like every other person. What or where is the disrespect? / Twitter”

Dr Great Oracle on Twitter: “This “Teni-disrespect” saga reminds the G.O of two incidents in our nation’s history. One touches on how the coconut head generation treats dubious awards; and the other, this: “The President is King”. Come with the G.O to Nigeria of 1988 and 1990. / Twitter”

Grand Commander of the Feminist Battalion on Twitter: “Narratives are very useless on Twitter because once it’s formed. Those arguing for and against it are already wrong. All Teni did was receive an award now we’re debating a non-existent thing. Starve it; it’s not wrong, it’s not right, it simply doesn’t exist. / Twitter”
