There’s exciting news for fans of Greek mythology and folklore, with Disney Plus executives finally green-lighting plans to turn Percy Jackson and The Olympians into a series.
The series adaptation of the Rick Riordan book series was first reported as being in the works at the streamer back in May 2020 and tells the fantasy of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.
The Percy Jackson book series is comprised of “The Lightning Thief,” “The Sea of Monsters,” “The Titan’s Curse,” “The Battle of the Labyrinth,” and “The Last Olympian.” Riordan has also published the companion book “The Demigod Files” as well as “The Demigod Diaries.”
Both “Lightning Thief” (2010) and “Sea of Monsters” (2013) were previously adapted into feature films, starring Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson.
Original author Rick Riordan, and Jon Steinberg have been recruited to write the first series, with James Bobin directing.
“With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about, and we’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humour, surprise, and mystery,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.
According to multiple reports, casting is currently underway on the series.
Riordan announced the series pick up in a video message, which can be viewed below.
