Following the accusations leveled against singer, R. Kelly, the Philadelphia city council has unanimously voted to ban the singer from entering the city.
“We reject a system that silences black women and and accepts black pain. We believe survivors R. Kelly is not welcome in Philadelphia. This symbolic act of solidarity puts all sexual predators on notice”, said Helen Gym, a councilwoman.
There have been noticeable resentments from a large number of Americans since the testimonies of a group of women who alleged that the singer sexually abused them when they were kids.
Although R. Kelly will not be arrested or physically removed if he entries Philadelphia, Gym noted that her resolution which she introduced last week was to send a message to the singer that the city supports his sexual abuse survivors and condemns the act.
“…a public declaration that R. Kelly and sexual predators like him don’t belong to the public sphere”, a report by Gym published by complex on Monday, 1st of February, 2019.
A movement has started on all social media calling for the boycott of the singer’s music under the #MuteRKelly.
On Friday, January 18, 2019, the singer’s name was reportedly found to be omitted on Sony RCA Records website. This has posed a problem for R. Kelly who is believed to have plans on releasing a new album.
