Senator Shehu Sani – Senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, has called for the cancellation of National Assembly elections in the state, saying they were characterized by irregularities.

Shehu Sani who contested on the platform of Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, said the elections did not represent the will of the people in any ramification.

Briefing newsmen, yesterday, on the outcome of the polls in Kaduna, Sani accused the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, of vote-buying.

He claimed there were cases of card readers malfunctioning and over voting, saying: “As a gentle and also as one with a background as an activist, it is supposed to be a situation where if you are not favoured by the electorate and it was free and fair, you are supposed to be a good sportsman. But you cannot be a sportsman in an arena of fraud particularly in Kaduna State.

In his words;

“There are issues that had happened that require the attention of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that the aspirations and hopes of Nigerians were not dashed by the conduct of some of its officials and also by the conduct of members and elements of government in the ruling party.

“The positive side is that we must appreciate the level of security in the state, the violent and thuggry that were expected never happened. This must have been as a result of the input of the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to do the best they could, at least in the city centre.

“But we are particularly concerned about some fundamental issues that seriously undermined the integrity and credibility of the National Assembly elections.

“First of all, our agents have formally reported to us that in many areas, the card reader malfunctioned and PVCs were not of any value. Second, there were cases of over voting in many polling units across the state.

“The number of votes that were recorded were higher than the people accredited to vote. Third, there was no serious scrutiny on the side of the election officials to ensure that those who came with PVCs were the actual owners.

“In Giwa Local Government Area, we had cases where some of the officials that conducted the election were not the ones trained by INEC. Those who were trained were replaced by people whom the ruling party, through the local government chairman nominated.

“In Birnin-Gwari, we have cases of harassment of voters and active thumb printing of ballot papers in collaboration with security agencies to increase the votes of the ruling party.”
