Leicester City and Nigerian international striker, Kelechi Iheanacho has been named March’s Premier League player of the month and becomes just the 4th Nigerian to win the award.
- Austin Jay-Jay Okoocha (Bolton Wanderers, November 2003)
- Osaze Odemwinge (West Bromwich Albion, September 2010, April 2011 and February 2012)
- Odion Ighalo (Watford, December 2015)
The 24-year-old Senior-man, as he has been often referred to on social media, scored five goals in three league appearances for the Foxes in the lead-up to the international break last month, including his first Premier League hat-trick against Sheffield United.
Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel was named manager of the month after he extended his run of league matches without defeat to 10 since arriving the London Club in January.
Tottenham’s Erik Lamela claimed the goal of the month award for his Rabona against Arsenal in the North London derby.
Iheanacho, whose partnership with Jamie Vardy came to the fore in the absence of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, also scored league goals in the 2-1 win at Brighton and the 1-1 draw against Burnley.
“I’m so pleased and honoured to win this award. It’s great to be recognised, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team-mates and the manager,” Iheanacho said.
“I’m really enjoying playing at the minute and hopefully I can push on and help the team to finish as high as possible this season.”
Iheanacho beat Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, Tottenham striker Harry Kane, West Ham’s Jesse Lingard, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and Brighton’s Leandro Trossard to the monthly award.
Leicester are currently third in the table and host league leaders, Manchester City, who had won both the player and manager awards for January and February through Ilkay Gundogan and Pep Guardiola, on Saturday, coverage on SuperSports.
