Wura: Showmax Set To Debut First Nigerian Original Telenovela In 2023

Showmax’s collection of Nigerian telenovelas keeps growing as the streaming service is set to debut another Nigerian original, Wura.

This latest addition has been revealed to be an adaptation of South African 1Magic hit telenovela The River and will premiere in January 2023.

Wura tells the story of Wura-Amoo Adeleke, a devoted wife, a loving mother of two, and a ruthless Chief Executive Officer of the fictional Frontline Gold Mine. Her family sees her as faultless and a saint, but when it comes to running her business, she’s the ultimate iron lady, not caring whom she has to trample to get exactly what she wants when she wants it.

The series takes place in the gold mining industry of Iperindo, a small community in Osun State in the South-Western part of Nigeria. Despite the community’s rich deposits of gold, its residents and surrounding communities are still plagued with poverty and exposed to environmental disasters due to illegal mining activities, an unfortunate reality the show promises to shed light on.

Addressing the upcoming show, Executive Head: Content and West Africa Channels, Multichoice Nigeria, Dr. Busola Tejumola said, “Wura explores the untold story of gold mining in Nigeria and is a demonstration of Showmax’s continued investment in authentic local stories. Each scene is carefully crafted to thoroughly entertain as well as educate our viewers. This is going to be our longest-running Nigerian telenovela with over 200 episodes, and as you can imagine, a lot of hard work and long hours have gone into making it. We are incredibly proud of the outcome and cannot wait to share it with the world.”

The drama series stars a mix of veterans and rising stars. Scarlet Gomez plays the female lead while Nollywood Yoruba actor Yomi Fash-Lanso plays the male lead, Anthony Amoo-Adeleke.

Also starring is Nollywood veteran Carol King who plays Grace Adeleke, Ray Adeka plays Jejeloya  ‘Jeje’ Amoo, Iremide Adeoye plays Lolu Adeleke, and Ego Iheanacho plays Iyabo Kuti, amongst several others.

Rogers Ofime, the series’ Executive Producer described the upcoming telenovela as “well-rounded”. He said,  “Our research into the world of ‘Wura’ has given us a new belief in Nollywood. We poured our hearts and soul into the show. Every word, every scene, and every reaction was a thought-provoking journey, a journey we would like you to be a part of and be entertained by. ‘Wura’ gives all the emotions that a well-rounded series should; it will pull you into its world of intricacies, whodunit, deceit, triumph, and suspense from the very first frame to the last. We have no doubt that our viewers will enjoy ‘Wura’ as much as we loved making it for their viewing pleasure.”

With Wura, Showmax’s investment in the Nigerian film industry continues to grow as the upcoming telenovela joins the likes of  reality TV show The Real Housewives of Lagos, docu-series on history of Afrobeats, Journey of the Beats, psychological thriller Diiche, drama series Flawsome, and most recently, the police procedural Crime and Justice Lagos.

Wura premieres on Showmax on January 26, 2023, with four episodes airing every week.
