We’re still digesting all the drama from the 2023 Oscars that saw Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert‘s Everything Everywhere All At Once win 7 awards, including Best Actress in a Lead role for Michelle Yeoh– the first Asian woman to land the category.
From surprise wins to over-sabi fashion statements, the Oscars did not disappoint, as usual. In fact, the only thing missing this year, from last year’s highlight, is a ‘slap’. Thank God Black men have learned to respect each other better.
However, Black men handed the baton of the Oscars controversial attendee(s) of the year to one Black woman, and she seems to have left a sour taste in the mouths of Hollywood people; her name: Temilade Openiyi, aka ‘Big’ Tems.
The Grammy winner narrowly missed out on her own award, of course. She was nominated alongside Rihanna for “Lift Me Up”, the song they contributed to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack album. It came as a surprise but it hasn’t caused too many raised eyebrows because the song they lost to is equally brilliant. But while she lost an award, she won on the night, with her name reverberating through the hypothetical walls of Twitter.
Our very own sweetheart, Tems did not only slay on the Oscar’s Red Carpet with her white dress, but she also turned the Oscars parlour into an abattoir, and Hollywood won’t forget that in a hurry. What a way to make your first appearance at film’s biggest night.
Her flowy, sheer outfit was beautiful– celestial, as she looked like an angel clad in all white. However, what is causing controversy about her ensemble is her large headgear. According to reports, the people who sat behind her struggled to see what was happening on stage because of the conspicuous size of the sheer material. That’s one way for a Black woman to stand out on a White-dominated night, isn’t it?
It’s such a big deal, that The New York Post and several other American publications have carried news of those whose Oscars experience appears to have been yawned in quality by Tems’ fashion statement. However, as you know, social media knows how to make the most of polarizing gossip and opinions.
While some Twitter users have supported Tems, accusing the media of picking on her because she’s a Black woman, others have stated she was a tad inconsiderate and should have changed into a simpler outfit after her Red Carpet cameo. Some have also taken it to the extreme, questioning America’s stance on racism, while opposite people are going gung-ho with the singer’s criticism.
Whatever, you know Nigerians will always have their say, and below is a sneak peek into how Twitter-NG is reacting to the controversy, including some hilarious takes that will remind you of how much of a spectacular breed Nigerians are.
