On Monday, June 7, 2021, American cable television network, Black Entertainment Television (BET) announced on their website and social media handles that Nigerian singer, and starlet, Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems has been nominated in the Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act category at the 2021 BET Awards. She joins Wizkid and Burna Boy as the other Nigerian acts to pick up nods for the occasion.
Tems’ nomination has come a few weeks after the first set of nominees were announced on May 27, 2021. However, she was nominated alongside South African R&B singer, Elaine; British acts; Arlo Parks and Bree Runway, who are both rappers and singers. French acts, Bramsito and Ronisia as well as Brazilian, MC Dricka are also nominated in the category.

For Tems, this follows a ground-breaking year for the singer, with her feature on Wizkid’s Made in Lagos hit track, Essence making the rounds across the world. Tems also dropped her debut EP, For Broken Ears and was nominated in the Next Rated category at the 2021 Headies Awards.
The 2021 BET Awards will hold live at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, June 27, 2021.
