The 10 Songs That Endeared Wizkid to Fans

Many staunch Wizkid followers fell in love with his music after they first listened to these songs. They also probably have more than seven of them in their playlist.

Since Wizkid arrived the musical sphere in the early 2010’s, he’s gone from one big hit to the other. His debut album ‘Superstar’ was a masterpiece that delivered varying sounds, with almost every record considered a hit song. Today, that album walks in the Hall of Fame of Afrobeats and everybody agrees it should.

With ‘Essence’ ft Tems scoring massive chart numbers and winning him new followership across the globe, we take a look at 10 select songs, some of the records that ignited the love story between the Nigerian music mogul and his fans.

 10. Soco ft. Starboy, Terri, Spotless, and Ceeza Milli

Released at a time when many thought Wizkid’s grip on the throne as the prince of Afrobeats was starting to slack, Wiz teamed up with promising young talents StarboyTerri, and Ceeza Milli to deliver one of Africa’s biggest bangers at that time.

9. Tease Me

A young Wizkid was just starting to ply his craft when he released ‘Tease Me,’ one of the promotional singles for his debut album ‘Superstar’ in 2011. Produced by Samklef, ‘Tease Me’ remains one of Wizkid’s most loved songs till date.

8. Slow Down

Ghanaian Hip Hop and High Life duo R2bees teamed up with Wizkid to deliver one of Africa’s biggest collaborations till date. And although he was a guest artist, Wiz owned the track, cementing his place as an elite musician on the pan-African scene. Like in Nigeria, ‘Slow Down’ was a massive hit in Ghana, and earned Wiz an occult following in the country.

7. On Top Your Matter

‘On Top Your Matter’ was the second single from Wizkid’s sophomore studio album ‘Ayo’ and was released in 2014. Wiz teamed up with producer Del B, and the rest as they say is history.

6. Final (Baba Nla)

Recognising the power that he wields, a little braggadocio had Wizkid singing, “Say my gbedu is final, When me drop, everybody no dey tire.” ‘Final’ was released in 2015 and is one of Wiz’s most shazamed singles till date.

5. Jaiye Jaiye

The fan favourite ‘Jaiye Jaiye’ was like a stroll back in time and indeed a wander into the future. Wiz linked up with Femi Kuti and veteran producer Sars to mastermind what was the lead single from his second studio album ‘Ayo.’ ‘Jaiye Jaiye’ was well beloved by fans, critics, and endeared Wiz to new followers across the Afrobeat, Jazz, and Afrojuju genres.

4. Pakurumo

Despite being delivered mainly in Yoruba, ‘Pakurumo’ was another hit from Wizkid’s ‘Superstar,’ that made people fall in love with him. With production heralded by Samklef again, the vocals and energy on the song remains one of Wiz’s most recognized signature styles till date.

3. Essence ft Tems

Can’t really say much about ‘Essence.’ The song’s credentials have been littered all over music and entertainment publications, and it may yet prove to be Wizkid’s most commercially successful and critically acclaimed record. Alongside gaining him new disciples especially from overseas, ‘Essence’ provided Wiz a medium to reconnect with his old pals and reaffirm his position as one of the best talents to ever export music outside Nigeria and Africa.

2. Ojuelegba

After revelling in the success of ‘Superstar,’ ‘Ojuelegba’ was like a tribute to Wiz’s roots, the city and the struggles that made the artist. It went on to score him several international collaborations with Canadian rapper Drake, marking Wizkid’s entrance into the international scene.

1. Holla At Your Boy

Loved by all, this was most people’s first encounter of the phenom that is Wizkid. There was nothing too technical or critical about ‘Holla At Your Boy,’ but it sits at the top of the most loved Wizkid songs chart. As far as adoring an artist because of a single act goes, this song sits up there with the greatest. Even more endearing was the track’s video directed by Patrick Elis, a collegiate setting, with cameos from several big names in the industry at that time engraved Wiz and the record in the hearts of many fans.
