The Brave Ones is the latest Netflix original to come from South Africa.

Since expanding into the African continent, Netflix has been doing marvelous things with its original content.

The Brave Ones is set in the parallel worlds of South Africa and the supernatural world of African gods and divine beings. The six-episode series will feature the mystical and supernatural in a setting viewers might not have previously encountered.

The official synopsis reads:

“Set in modern-day South Africa, this captivating supernatural series is inspired by the rich mythology of African gods and divine beings. It tells the story of ordinary township girl Ntsiki, who discovers she is a mystical being who must harness her powers to protect the community and avenge her sister’s murder.”

Nigerian-born Akin Omotoso, the show’s creator, also serves as director and executive producer for this project. The other creatives behind the project are Robbie Thorpe, Portia Gumede, and Steven Pillemer.

The series stars Sthandile Nkosi, Nomalanga Nkosi, Bonko Khoza, to mention but a few.

“We are working with top talent and filmmakers as well as exciting emerging voices from the continent. We are thrilled to expand our partnerships with Africa’s talented storytellers,” said Netflix local language films in Africa director Tendeka Matatu.

“With an ever-growing slate of series, movies and licensed content across a rich variety of best-in-class content across genres, we want to give our members more moments to share the joy that comes from being immersed in great stories made in Africa, to be watched by the world,” he added.

The Brave Ones arrives Netflix on 16 September 2022.
