Singer Tiwa Savage has been cast as the lead character in the upcoming feature film titled ‘Water and Garri”. The singer shared the news on social media on Wednesday, February 15.
Savage, whose Water and Garri album dropped in 2021, wrote and performs the film’s original soundtrack and is an executive producer through her Everything Savage outfit.
Principal photography for ‘Water and Garri’ took place in Cape Coast, Ghana, and follows Savage’s character, a US-based budding fashion designer who returns to her home in Africa to confront the guilt she left behind. Before she broke out as an Afrobeats star, Savage was originally based abroad; she was a backup singer for Beyonce, alternating the UK and US before returning to Nigeria to sign for Don Jazzy’s Mavin outfit.
Direction was helmed by Meji Alabi from a screenplay by Comfort Emmanuel, with Unbound’s Jimi Adesanya producing. Alabi and Adesanya also serve as executive producers, along with Vanessa Amadi-Ogbonna. Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting and Jemima Osunde star with Savage.
