Since its conception in 1997, Netflix has evolved from just mailing out DVD’s to subscribers to becoming one of the most famous streaming service and production company in the world, putting out numerous movies and television series every year. Amongst these movies are a several standouts that manage to pull in massive numbers of subscribers amounting to massive viewing hours. Here’s a list of 10 of those standout films;
10. The Irishman (2019) – 214.57 million hours
Released by Netflix in 2019, The Irishman was yet another stroke of Martin Scorsese’s genius, an epic gangster film that featured all the usual faces you’d expect to see in a Scorsese masterpiece.
Frank Sheeran (played by Robert De Niro), a seemingly harmless elderly war veteran in a nursing home recounts his days in the Italian mafia and how he rose through the ranks ‘’painting houses.”
Alongside De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Romano, also star.
9. The Unforgivable (2021) – 214.70 million hours
In The Unforgivable, Sandra Bullock plays Ruth Slater, a woman released from prison after serving a 20-year sentence for murder, and attempts to reunite with her estranged younger sister.
Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, The Unforgivable also stared Viola Davis, Jon Bernthal, Vincent D’Onofrio, Aisling Franciosi, and Richard Thomas amongst others.
8. Purple Hearts (2022) – 228.69 million hours
A beautiful romance story based on the novel of the same name, Purple Hearts follows Cassie, a strong-willed singe who marries a soon-to-be-deployed marine for monetary benefits but when tragedy strikes, their fake relationship evolves into something way too real.
Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, Purple Hearts stars Sofia Carson, Nicholas Galitizine, Chosen Jacobs, and Linden Ashby, amongst others.
7. Extraction (2020) – 231.3 million hours
Back in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic with most of the world in lockdown, Netflix gifted movie fans with the banging action thriller Extraction which saw Chris Hemsworth play a black-market mercenary on an impossible mission to rescue the kidnapped son of a drug kingpin.
Directed by Sam Hargrave, Extraction also featured Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, and David Harbor, amongst others.
6. The Adam Project – 233.15 million hours
In The Adam Project, not only did Netflix gift movie lovers a top-notch science fiction film mixed up with the classic Ryan Reynolds humor we’ve all come to love, but they also introduced us to the acting talent and child twin of Reynolds that is Walker Scobell.
The film follows a time-traveling pilot who after unintentionally crash-landing in 2022, teams up with his younger self to save his wife and the future from the evil businesswoman who runs the world using time travel. Starring alongside Reynolds and Scobell are Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana, and Catherine Keener.
5. The Gray Man – 253.87 million hours
The Gray man, Netflix’s biggest action film to date, sees the charming and graceful Ryan Gosling take on what has been said by many to be his best action role since 2011’s Drive. He plays a Jason Bourn- Esque hitman known only as ‘Six’. a shadowy CIA agent who takes possession of damning agency secrets and gets hunted across the globe by a crazy rogue operative for it.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, it also stars Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Rege Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, and Julia Butters amongst others.
4. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – 273.2 million hours
Following the success of Rian Johnson’s 2019 hit, Knives Out, Glass Onion was released late last year to the arms of eagerly waiting fans who pretty much devoured the sequel the moment it dropped.
Following up on Benoit Blanc’s mystery solving escapades, we see the renowned detective go on a trip to a private island to figure out what skeletons lurk in the closet of a tech billionaire and his eclectic crew of friends.
Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline all feature.
3. Bird Box – 282.02 million hours
Released in 2018 to the intrigue of movie fans, Bird Box chronicles a post-apocalyptic world where only a mere sight of a mysterious force pretty much guarantees your death leaving the world’s population decimated and the few alive voluntarily blind.
Bird Box was directed by Susanne Bier and featured Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Machine Gun Kelly, amongst others.
2. Don’t Look Up – 359.79 million hours
Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay’s satirical take on the events leading to planet-wide extinction debuted on Netflix in December 2021, and the film’s controversial reception was more than enough to pique viewers’ interests.
Don’t Look Up saw DiCaprio and Lawrence play two low-level astronomers who must warn the world about an approaching comet capable of destroying planet Earth. Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep, and Jonah Hill, all appeared in supporting roles.
1. Red Notice (2021) – 364.02 million hours
When you make a movie featuring three of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, people are going to tune in and watch.
Featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, Red Notice currently holds the number one spot for the most-watched film on Netflix of all time. The action-comedy sees an Interpol agent (Johnson) team up with the world’s second-most-wanted art thief (Reynolds) to capture the world’s most-wanted art thief (Gadot). Rawson Marshall Thurber directs and Ritu Arya, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Brenna Marie also star.
