Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick joins the prestigious $1 billion club at the box office.
It’s only the second movie to do so since 2019, after Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.
I figured this sequel would be a success, especially since its predecessor, Top Gun, remains beloved 36 years after its initial release, but never would I have guess it’d make it across the $1B mark.
Congratulations are in order for Tom Cruise; with a career spanning over three decades now, this is his first movie to make it this big at the box office.
Top Gun: Maverick follows the titular Maverick after more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviator. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.
