Trailer: Disney+ Debuts First-Look At ‘Rise’ Based On The Life Of Giannis Antetokounmpo And Family

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo may just be only 27-years-old but he’s already a formidable name on and off the basketball court. In Rise, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s story plays out on screen for the world to see.

The Disney+ film follows the lives of the Antetokounmpos, an immigrant family from Nigeria struggling to make a life for themselves in Greece amid daily threats of deportation. The story will trail their emigration to the United States and rise to fame and success within the National Basketball Association.

Rise stars newcomers Uche Agada and Ral Agada, real-life brothers, playing Giannis and Thanasis, respectively. Also starring are Jaden Osimuwa (Kostantinos), Elijah Shomanke, Yetide Badaki (Veronica Antetokounmpo), and Dayo Okeniyi (Charles Antetokounmpo), in supporting family roles.

Production for the film kicked off last year with the real-life Giannis Antetokounmpo serving as an executive producer.

The basketball star had this to say about the project:

“I am thrilled and honored that Disney+ is bringing my family’s story to people all over the world.

“My hope is that it will inspire those in similar circumstances to keep the faith, stay true to their goals and not to give up on striving for a better life.”

Rise is expected to premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2022.
