Disney is the first man to reach the finish line with its take on the popular Pinnochio children’s story. For those who don’t know, Guillermo del Toro is also developing a Pinocchio story of his own, but that’s a conversation for another day.
Starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood today, Disney’s first-look at Pinocchio looks as exciting as it is sure to have been expensive to make. Tom Hanks (Geppetto), Cynthia Erivo (The Blue Fairy), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Jiminy Cricket), Keegan Michael Key (Pinocchio), and Luke Evans (The Coachman) are some of the stars in the project.
Pinocchio’s plot follows the woodworker Geppetto, who sees a falling star; he wishes that the puppet he just finished, Pinocchio, could become a real boy. In the night, the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish and asks Jiminy Cricket to serve as the wooden boy’s conscience. But the naive and trusting Pinocchio falls into the clutches of the wicked Honest John, who leads him astray to the sinful Pleasure Island.
The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz.
Pinocchio is scheduled to be released on Disney+ on September 8, 2022.
