All 10 seasons of the popular MTV’s Shuga are now streaming on Netflix.
The pan-African series originally premiered in 2009 in Kenya with two (2) seasons before moving to Nigeria, where it premiered four (4) seasons. The next stop was South Africa with two (2), then Cote D’Ivoire with another two (2). All of which can now be available on Netflix.
“We’re thrilled that Netflix is taking the full MTV Shuga series. Not only does it give the Netflix audience the chance to see some of the biggest actors across the continent – including Lupita Nyong’o and Thuso Mbedu – starring in several MTV Shuga series; but it also allows us to reach a brand new and wide audience with our proven behavior-changing content for the continent’s youth”, said Georgia Arnold, Executive Director at MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility, at ViacomCBS Networks International.

MTV Shuga is an initiative of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation to help combat the prevalence of HIV/AIDS across the continent. The drama expertly fuses pop culture, trending music, and youthful storytelling to positively impact young people in the direction of practicing safe sex, staying away from gender-based violence, and everything else in between.
The show has been an immense success since its launch with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation saying, “A 2017 study by the World Bank proved that viewers of the television drama were twice as likely to test for HIV… the show’s storylines have educated a growing fanbase across the world since the show debuted in Kenya in 2009.”
