WCW – Afro-pop Singer, Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade is the first African female artist to hit over 100 million views on Youtube and VEVO with her hit single “Johnny”, which is now the most viewed video from an African female artiste.

Our woman crush for this week is none other than the popularly acclaimed ‘Mama Africa’, Yemi Alade. Born Yemi Eberechi Alade in March, 1989 in Abia state to a Yoruba father and an Igbo mother, the Afropop superstar was raised in Lagos, Nigeria.

She attended Secondary school at Victory Grammar School, Ikeja and bagged a degree in Geography from the University of Lagos.

She made her first music break after winning the Peak Talent Show back in 2009 and a year later, released her first single titled Fimisile.

Her smash hit single Johnny with currently over 100 million views on YouTube was released in 2014 after she signed to ‘Effyzzie Music Group’. Since then, she gained prominence in the music industry and is considered one of Africa’s biggest artist.

The multi-talented singer has won various awards including best female artist in 2015 and 2016 at the MTV Africa Music Awards ‘MAMAs’ and happens to be the first female to win for two years consecutively. In addition, she won awards at ‘The Headies’ for Best Performer of the year twice and has received multiple nominations from BET Awards, Independent Awards and Soundcity MVP Awards.

She currently has five studio albums accompanied with multiple endorsements and in 2019, signed a multi-year licensing deal with Universal Music Africa (UMA) and UMG France. 

The singer is widely known for her catchy tunes done in English, Yoruba, Igbo, French and even in Swahili. Her music has been of influence in many African countries and the world as she is acclaimed “Mama Africa” for her versatility in using different African languages and attires in her songs and music videos.

She currently stands as the most followed African female artist on social media with over 25 million followers on all platforms.

Yemi doubles up as an actress and has featured in movies such as ‘The home’ and popular Nollywood blockbuster, Omo Ghetto: The Saga. She is presently a coach at the music talent show ‘The Voice Nigeria.’
