What Inspired ‘Anikulapo’? – Kunle Afolayan Reveals

Anikulapo movie inspiration

Kunle Afolayan, who isn’t a stranger to making great films, has revealed the inspiration behind his latest, well-received movie Anikulapo

Speaking in an interview with KAPTV, the prolific filmmaker revealed the reason he went ahead to make Anikulapo, the epic movie starring Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale among many other Nigerian-born superstars.

Afolayan revealed that he also wanted a movie that will “depict who we are as Nigerians and Africans”.

“One I would say Nigeria, Nigeria is a lot of inspiration, and two I like stories that really depict who we are as Nigerians, as Africans. Then again, I’m very into originality, authenticity, and the fact that the Yoruba story isn’t even yet to be scrapped,” he said.

“If you look around, gone are those days when our fathers actually started with Yoruba films but now a lot of people would rather do it in English.

“Trust me if you dig deep, the Yoruba culture, the Igbo culture, the Hausa culture, Ibibio, Benin, in fact, you would not want to do anything in English because all these cultures have deep stories that if we start, I believe for the next 100 years, we would have a lot,” Afolayan added.

Anikulapo tells the story of Saro, a young cloth weaver who, after an affair with the king’s wife, is sent to an early death. But an encounters with a mystical bird gives him a second lease at life.

The story is one of life, death, resurrection, and destiny. It quickly become the #1 movie in Nigeria and, soon, the world via Netflix. There are plans to continue the story via a TV series spin-off. It is Kunle Afolayan’s fourth movie to release on Netflix in an overall deal with the streaming service.
