What We Learned from Spotify’s End of Year Report for Nigeria

Wizkid topped most of the streaming numbers for Spotify Nigeria in 2021. Which artists topped your Spotify Wrapped list this year?

Although we’ve still got a few weeks left in 2021, the end of the year report cards and numbers for many businesses are already rolling in. Global music streaming giants Spotify followed that trend, recently sharing the compilations of the records and artists that made 2021 a memorable year for Nigerians and the entire world, as far as music is concerned.

Here, we look at a few highlights from the data that was released by Spotify for Nigeria.

Home Grown Artists Holding It Down for Nigerians

2021 was dominated by quality music throughout, both from Nigerian musicians and their foreign counterparts, with big names like Drake and Kanye West releasing new albums.

However, Nigerian artists dominated Spotify’s top 5 most streamed artists in the country. The list includes Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Drake, and Olamide in first to fifth position respectively.

Homegrown Music Getting the Most Love

Nigerians are patronising our local musicians more than their foreign counterparts. However, it is worthy to note that it’s a feat that’s not solely based on preference. The quality of our homegrown music has been on and exponential rise since the last couple of years. However, many will argue that 2021 has seen the most significant of such remarkable increase in quality. Ladipoe’s Feeling feat Buju was the most streamed record of 2021, followed by Peru by Fireboy DML, Bounce by Ruger, Understand by Omah Lay, with Monalisa by Lojay and Sars completing the top 5.

Tems and Ayra Star are The Hottest Female Musicians in The Country`

Describing the success that Nigerian music has enjoyed this year will, of course, be incomplete without mentioning Tems. As well as being up for several awards including a Grammy, she’s the most streamed female Nigerian artist followed by 19-year-old Mavin Records’ act Ayra Star. Doja Cat, Teni, and Tiwa savage are the other artists in the top 5.

Wizkid’s Made in Lagos Rollout Provides Template for More Commercial Success

To say 2021 has been a successful year for Wizkid, is to downlplay his countless achievements this year. But it was his 2020 brainchild, his fourth studio album Made In Lagos that kicked off his unbelievable series of achievements. However, Wiz had a commercial masterplan- a global tour and a deluxe version of his album with international collaboration. Made In Lagos (Deluxe) was the most streamed album in Nigeria, followed by the original version of the album while Davido’s a better time is either side of Justin Bieber’s Justice and Drake’s Certified Lover Boy to complete the top 5.
