Wizkid Joins Exclusive List of Nigerian Musicians to Land ‘RIAA Gold Certification’

Only 2 Nigerian records had been certified gold before in the US; Davido’s ‘Fall’ and Burna Boy’s ‘Ye.’

It’s a ground-breaking achievement to be recognised by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). But ground-breaking is a term increasingly and directly associated with Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ ft Tems.

After producing insane numbers in sales, streaming, and popularity in the US, the globetrotting hit has now been certified ‘Gold’ by RIAA.

A ‘Gold’ certification is issued when a record or an album hits 500,000 units in sales in the US. Released in October 2020, ‘Essence’ was not even the lead single off Wizkid’s fourth studio album, Made in Lagos. However, it has been the driving force behind its success. The original song made its debut on the Billboard 100 chart back in July, but after a remix with American singer Justin Beiber, the songs sales and clout soared even further.

With this award from RIAA, Wizkid might just be set for mega recognition at next year’s Grammy Awards. Even more so, ‘Essence’ may yet be certified ‘Platinum’ if this surge continues.
