Nigerian musician Wizkid broke a long standing record, becoming only the first African to be certified Platinum by RIAA. His hit song “Essence” featuring fellow countryman, singing sensation Tems has been at the very pinnacle of Wiz’s fourth studio album Made In Lagos’ success.
Ahead of his visit to Los Angeles, as part of his MIL tour of the US, Wiz sat down with American Entertainment news outlet Complex’s Claire Ateku to discuss making “Essence” and linking up with Justin Bieber for the remix, as well as other things.
“Essence” became a sensation of summer 2021 in the US, debuting at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, dominating airplays and streaming markets. After the remix with Justin Bieber, the record became even more popular and today, that remix sits on number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. Quite some achievement!
Speaking about how he got to link up with Justin Bieber, Wiz revealed Bieber reached out to him, stating his admiration for the track, and eventually sent in his verse.
“He reached out to me and he loved the record. He sent the verse and it was just fire,” Wizkid told Complex.
Bieber and Wiz have since appeared on stage to perform the song, and the Canadian even made a mini-video for his verse which he share on Instagram.
