“Essence” is a 2020 song and the 11th track off Nigerian musician Wizkid’s fourth studio album, Made In Lagos. The song which was co-produced by Legendary Beats and P2J, features fast rising Nigerian singing sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems.
Several months after its release, “Essence” made its entry into the Billboard Hot 100 chart, debuting at number 82. The feat led to the song receiving more attention in the US with both Wiz and Tems praised for their performance on the joint.
Shortly afterwards, Wizkid announced he would be featuring Justin Bieber on a remix of the song, and it proved to be the leading single for a deluxe version of Made In Lagos. The Justin Bieber featured version of “Essence” boosted the original song’s commercial and critical success, subsequently supercharging its hype, making it occupy higher positions on the Hot 100 chart.
After it sold more than 500 copies in the US, “Essence” was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in September, and having doubled that commercial achievement, the song has now received a Platinum certification.
No nigerian or African song had been certified Platinum in the US prior to this time. The feat puts Wiz in an enviable position for next year’s award season, and fans of the superstar will be hoping for a solo Grammy nod, and possible win with such remarkable success. Currently, “Essence Remix” has climbed up to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. No Nigerian song had ever reached such heights as well.
