Do you know that in Nigeria, Santa Claus is often referred to as Father Christmas? According to the English Origins of Father Christmas, from his earliest days until the 19th century, he was a strictly allegorical figure.
Father Christmas was a symbol of the Christmas season, rather than a mythical being. He was often depicted as a merry old man who presided over festive parties, not a gentle giver of gifts.
Well, not only is Father Christmas used interchangeably with Santa Claus in Nigeria, it’s also become a slang to refer to people who simply give at no cost.
